About Us

Highland Dance Dubai was established in 2007. In the space of only a few years, the school has become well known throughout the United Arab Emirates, with students regularly invited to participate in balls, weddings, shopping centre displays, and many other events.

Highland Dancing is a style of athletic, mostly solo dancing, originating from Scotland, and performed to the accompaniment of bagpipe music. The style of dance is highly competitive and technical, requiring hours of practice, and training over a period of many years to perfect. While the main element of Highland Dancing is concerned with footwork, the dances also incorporate a combination of upper body, arm and hand movements.

Judges evaluate a dancer on three major criteria: technique, rhythm, and interpretation/overall deportment.

Although in modern years Highland Dancing has become very popular with women, it was originally a male-only sport due to the large amount of strength, and stamina required for the dances. Today, many of the world champions are still men, reflecting the suitability and popularity of this form of dance for all genders.

People of all ages and nationalities will enjoy Highland Dancing, beginning from the age of four. Pupils are taught positions, movements, and dances to both traditional Scottish and contemporary music, building strength, flexibility and focus, among other things.

Students are taught by Carissa Crowley, an SOBHD-certified (Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing) teacher, who has more than 18 years of highland dancing dancing experience. Before founding Highland Dance Dubai, Carissa taught at the Cairngorm Highland Dance studio in Brisbane, Australia.
